Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP) virtual machine (VM) takes bet-ter advantage of the virtualization technology by supporting multiproces-sor infrastructure and achieves better usage of the physical resources. How-ever, the hypervisor and the scheduler brings impact on the I/O perfor-mance as the vCPU’s scheduling latency would actually translate into the VM’s I/O events processing delays. Most researches address this I/O prob-lem in the case of a single processor VM, leaving the facts that the problem goes more complex and significant on the multiprocessor platform. In this paper, we present vINT (scheduling status based virtual IN-terrupt remapping adapTer) as a software solution which brings a big im-provement on the I/O performance for SMP-VMs. In order to maintain good flexibility and availability, vINT requires no modification to the Guest OS but only a few changes on the hypervisor. We implement the prototype on Xen virtualization platform and conduct detailed evaluations on both micro-level and application-level benchmarks. Our experimental results show that vINT increases networking throughput by 5x and reduces the required execute time of disk I/O by 33.2% while only introduces a mod-erate and reasonable overhead.
