The new internet technology develops rapidly, the network application becomes more and more, the more and more network data bandwidth is required, and the refined and different network service is pressing. The FTTX(Fiber to the x) with high bandwidth and high speed is the idea technology to resolve these problems. Most of countries take it as a part of national strategy. The current 1G EPON or 2.5G GPON won’t satisfy the network bandwidth requirement. Developing the next generation PON becomes imperative. 10 G EPON have the advantage on bandwidth, it’s downstream and upstream are both have 10 G bandwidth. Hence, it is considered the most representative and have good prospect. In the 10 G EPON system, OLT can support up to 1024 LLID connections. More connections need more network management operation. This require the implementation of OAM protocol more efficiency. The service flow can’t be affected by the increment of management packages. Be along with the intensive study of application on EPON, some important extended OAM protocol standard are updated constantly. For meeting the requirement of the latest EPON application, and support the current EPON infrastructure, we need a new OAM implementation which can support the latest protocol update and be compatible with the old protocol. For processing the OAM packages more efficiently, the OAM implementation described in this paper are the combination of hardware and software. When the OAM package arrive at O LT or ONU, the EPON chip will recognize the OAM package, at the same time, EPON chip will analyze the header of the package. Depending on the header information, this OAM package will be sent to CPU or be discarded. The software just needs to process the content of the OAM package. For make sure the OAM package can be received by CPU or be sent out the chip when the system is busiest, the OAM package will be marked the highest priority. In the EPON system, usually, there are a lot of queries for ONU’ configuration from O LT, and ONU’s configurations are set by OLT. For speed up the response for OLT’s query requirement, the O AM configuration package is cached on ONU. After ONU received OLT’s query package, ONU can get the cached OAM configuration package content, add appropriate package header, and then sent it to O LT. This approach saves the time that used b y ONU collecting configuration. This OAM implementation is for C hina Telecom Company’s extended OAM protocol. It compatible with all versions: 1.0,2.0,2.1 and 3.0. For compatible with the other’s extended O AM protocol, this implementation supplies a registration mechanism for registering the OAM packaged handle function. This OAM implementation support the network management for 1024 LLID connection. It consists by two parts: OLT part and ONU part. On the ONU, the O AM implementation supports multiple LLID. The ONU which has multiple LLID can use the bandwidth more subtly. This implementation not only supports the latest C TC’s extended OAM protocol, and supports the old. And then supply a method for supporting the other extended OAM protocol standard. This implementation supplies abundant APIs, this makes the devices vendor can do developing more conveniently.
