In recent years, a surge of construction of FTTH improves the speed of optical network. And it is also promoting the progress of China’s information exchange in the society. But it is made the bandwidth hungry in the metropolitan area networks. Applying WDM technology into the metropolitan area network, the bandwidth can be effectively increased, which will solve the bandwidth problem. However, the WDM technology will bring up some additional problems such as the optical attenuation, dispersion and nonlinearity, which might be some of the most important factors when using WDM technology.Shanghai as an international metropolis, has been committed to the research and application of WDM technology in its metropolitan area networks. Shanghai telecom began this application as early as 2001. With the demand of bandwidth is increasing rapidly in recent years, WDM is regarded inevitable to introduced in Shanghai. Through in-depth understanding of Shanghai telecom WDM technology in metropolitan area network, based on the present status of WDM, the thesis will focus on the demand analysis of WDM application, proposing future WDM program, which will effectively promote the development of Shanghai telecom metropolitan area network in the future. This analysis will set a good example of WDM application for other Chinese cities.
