Intelligent optimization algorithm is one of the most interesting topics in modern computer technology research, since it can solve many complex problems that are very tough to resolve for traditional algorithms. Among all the optimization algorithms have been developed so far, cuckoo search algorithm has attracted the attention of the scientists, for its few parameters, fast convergence and high efficiency. This paper dwells on the interesting algorithm focusing on the impact of the algorithm’s parameters on the performance. Meanwhile, an improved cuckoo search algorithm called swarm cuckoo search algorithm (SCS) is developed in terms of the shortcomings of the basic cuckoo search algorithms (BCS). For issues most concerned in control, many problems can, or even only can be solved by intelligent optimization algorithm. This paper employed SCS to deal with the problems incuding:(1) Parameters estimation for multiple test signals. This paper dwells on the relationship between the estimated parameters and indicators, and the developed SCS will be used to estimate the parameters of the models when the test signals are multiple. In simulation experiments, different kinds of processes are approached to illustrate the efficacy.(2) The tuning of PID controllers with multi-objectives and multi-constraints. It is tough for traditional optimization methods to figure out the complicated issue. SCS is taken again in order to address this issue by transferring multi-objectives problems to single objective problems and transferring multi-constraints problems to unrestraint problems.(3) The design of the compensators in the proposed anti-windup controllers in this paper. If saturation presents in the input of the process object, the control quality will be inferior as a result of the deviation between the output of the controller and the input of the process. Therefore, qualitative analysis based feed forward compensating IMC-PID controllers are proposed. By introducing three compensators which are designed by SCS, the output response is speed up and the control quality is lifted a lot.(4) The design of IMC-PID for multivariable systems. In terms of the disadvantages of the design method based on EOTF, IMC-PID design method based on coarse models is proposed. Coarse model is put forward the first time in this paper, which is concerned about the models of the control loop in the multivariable systems. Two MIMO system examples are illustrated to show that the coarse models based method is effective for the IMC-PID controller design of the multivariable systems.
