With the development of wireless broadband networks and the popularity of smart mobile phones, more and more mobile and wireless video terminals are widely used in multimedia communications. In general, wireless coding devices have many disadvantages, like weak computation capability and energy limited, so the encoder should be low complex and with god error robustness and high compression efficiency. However, the most widely used video coding standards such as MPEG or H.26 X are unable to meet the requirements of new applications. In order to meet the need of new applications, domestic and foreign scholars have proposed a novel video compression method: distributed video coding(DVC) technology.This thesis introduces the basic theory of DVC, and focuses research on the key technology and algorithm of coding system. The specific contents include:(1) Firstly, the basic principles of DVC including Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv theorems have been presented. Then, introduces two typical DVC systems, and reviews the typical applications of the DVC technology.(2) Secondly, the thesis focuses on analysis of side information generation and reconstruction which are the key technology of DVC. On one hand, based on the study of the Sub-frame revise algorithm,an improved side information generation algorithm is proposed. The improved algorithm divided frame into violent and static blocks set.The algorithm aids generation higher quality of side information by using the spatial correlation of neighboring blocks.On the other hand, an improved reconstruction algorithm based on edge adjustment called IMAP algorithm was implemented. IMAP algorithm makes full use of the parity bits which help to reconstruct the video image.At last a lot of emulation experiments was done with these two improved algorithms, Extensive simulations over various test video sequences show that these proposed algorithms improve subjective and objective performance compared with traditional side information generation algorithms and reconstruction algorithms,(3)Finally, a practical distributed video coding system is constructed in transform domain based on the two proposed algorithms, and simulates the rate distortion performance testing for the optimized DVC system. The testing results show that, the proposed scheme of DVC system obviously improves the coding efficiency and the rate distortion performance have been effectively improved, what is more, compared with the traditional distributed video coding system, the reconstructed video subjective quality are improved.
