TWTs are widely used in a variety of radar, communications, television, telemetry, electronic warfare, etc. The main function of TWTs is power amply and the TWTs are very important in the field of microwave devices.Unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) plays an irreplaceable role in the future war. The demand of Ku-band pulse TWT which used in UAV will indubitably be increased. The characters of UAV are small size, light weight, small load capacity, which requires TWTs used in unmanned aerial vehicles with light weight and high efficiency. In this paper, the background knowledge is introduced at first, including the basic situation of the UAV, the history of the traveling wave tube, the basic structure of the TWTs, slow-wave structure and interaction, reducing Helix losses and MDC principles. The main task of this paper is enhancing total efficiency of the Ku-band pulse TWTs. Contents are divided into four parts. Firstly, the dynamic velocity taper(DVT) technology of the helix is researched, using simulation software to improve the efficiency of slow-wave system interaction; then, copperizing technics is employed to reduce the loss of helix; then, the depressed collector is studied; finally, the sample tube is assembled according to the results of the simulation design. The tube has been tested. According to the result, this Ku-band pulsed TWT has achieved the objectives, and the overall efficiency of the TWT is more than 35%.At the end of this paper, the simulation results and sample tube test results are compared. The error sources are analyzed, and conclusions are presented at last.
