Currently, processing and using of large volume materials of mines, ports, large trade market, granary, etc. is increasing gradually. But there is no suitable measuring method for bulky, irregularly shaped materials, Therefore it has great practical significance for the convenience of living and production to design a system which is able to measure these large volume materials rapidly in real time.In this paper, the issue of large volume materials measurement was proposed based on binocular stereo vision and a measurement system for large volume materials was constructed. First, the camera was preprocessed by distortion calibration and geometric correction methods and the internal and external parameters of binocular camera were obtained and the coordinate parameters of binocular vision were calibrated. Then the quality of images obtained by camera is enhanced by filtering and gray stretching methods to obtain feature points. Finally, the three-dimension information of large volume materials was reconstructed by image matching and three-dimensional coordinate transformation and its volume and weight were evaluated. This paper processed three-dimensional reconstruction of large volume materials using binocular stereo vision platform. Then the volume of materials was obtained and the weight of it was calculated taking into account its density. The errors of the results were within a reasonable range and fully compliant with the requirements of the practical application and operational needs. The research provides feasible basis for real time measurements of the volume of mines, ports, etc. therefore it has excellent practicability and research value.
