Binocular stereo vision is the research focus in the fields of computer vision, whose goal is to obtain the3D information of reality objects from a pair of2D images shot by cameras. It is also an important method for people to cognize, identify and understand3D objects using computers. This technical has wide application fields; and it has a good application prospect in the fields of traffic, medical, artificial intelligence, popular science, and so on.Virtual tennis system researched in this paper is designed as a human-computer interac-tion system for popular science, whose core technology is binocular stereo vision. The aim of the system is to obtain the sequence of3D coordinates of the tennis, then judge the landing position, and reconstruct the movement track of the tennis using virtual reality technology by recognizing and locating the running tennis continually in shot image pairs. This can provide the playback of tennis motion and make it possible for observation of details.Based on virtual tennis system, several key technologies of binocular stereo vision are mainly researched in this paper, summarized as follows:Studying and achieving the camera calibration in binocular stereo vision. Firstly, improv-ing SUSAN algorithm and Harris algorithm to detect chessboard corner, and analyzing results of the two algorithms on accuracy and stability. Secondly, achieving camera calibration in bi-nocular stereo vision considering imaging distortion based on two-step Tsai algorithm.Studying the typical methods about moving objects detection, and detecting the moving tennis considered of the real time and robustness demand of the system. Various methods about object recognition are proposed and analysed based on the characters of uneven distri-bution of light and fast moving of the object in the paper, and methods with good an-ti-jamming and real-time performance are determined in the paper. Studying and achieving stereo matching of virtual tennis system, and obtaining3D coor-dinates of the tennis track. An idea of fitting space parabola in steps is proposed to gain the data of tennis track, which is in accurate, even, smooth and continuous fashion. Judging the landing position of the tennis and reconstructing the movement track of the tennis and show-ing the playback of tennis motion.After studying and achieving every technique module of binocular stereo vision, virtual tennis system of China Science Museum’s new building was developed. Nearly a year’s stable running condition of the system indicates that the3D positioning technology based on bin-ocular stereo vision studied in this paper has achieved good effects. The system is feasible, reliable and stable.
