With the rapid of wireless communication technique, the range of application of antenna become more and more widely, and its performance requirements are also getting higher and higher. Before fabricating an antenna, we usually need to design the structure and size of the device by using electromagnetic simulation software, and then optimize the size of the device according to the simulation results. The optimization of electromagnetic modals can markedly reduce repeated work and improve the efficiency of the designers’ work. With most of electromagnetic simulation software developed with the function of optimization, such as Ansoft HFSS, we can create an optimization setup to search the best sizes for our electromagnetic modals. But the best structure size searched by HFSS optimization is usually the local optimal value rather than the global optimal value. At the same time only one project parameter can be optimized in one HFSS optimization design. Fortunately, HFSS offers secondary development by recording VBS script, and this is possible to optimize microwave devices by writing external program.PSO (Partial Swarm Optimization) is one of the Swarm Intelligence Algorithms with the ability of global optimization. Compared with other evolution algorithms, it has the advantage of easily programming, less parameter settings and fast calculation. In this paper, MALAB software is used to program the PSO algorithm, and a MATLAB function library of hfssapi is employed to write the VBS language of modeling in HFSS. Then, we can run the MATLAB script to start the HFSS software to calculate the performance parameters of electromagnetic modals. Finally the results will be returned to MATLAB program to iterative optimization. In this paper, the antenna is served as the cut-in point of our study, and PSO algorithm is applied to optimize the antenna modals in HFSS software. The main contents are followed as:(1) A cylindrical ENZ antenna is simulated in the HFSS, and PSO algorithm is used to optimize the frequency of the resonance point of the antenna locating around1.1GHz.(2) The bandwidth of a microstrip antenna based ENZ metamaterials is optimized by PSO algorithm. The antenna performances the omnidirectional radiation at working frequency. (3) PSO algorithm is used to optimize A UWB antenna with parasitic patch and asymmetric feed to performance better in parameters.
