Cultural heritage is the state and national symbol of civilization and precious wealth, the protection of cultural heritage has been the important topic of the Chinese culture construction. With the advent of the era of network, digital technology and virtual tourism develop quickly, which provides a new way and possible to solve this problem. Virtual tourism is aimed to achieve virtual reconstruction of historical sites by digital means. This paper mainly studies the virtual tourism system based on the augmented reality, the research on which is not yet mature, still has a lot of realistic problems.Aiming at these problems, the paper studies the practicability of the virtual tourism platform. This paper proposes a virtual tourism platform system which can be used in outdoor and has the advantages of cross-platform, portability and real-time. The virtual tourism platform adapts the market demand and can make the public use widely. In this paper, the research work of the system is divided into the following three aspects:(1) Based on complexity of the outdoor scene, we study an algorithm which can accurately identify the outdoor scene. Comparing with various algorithms of image recognition, we ultimately select image recognition algorithm based on local characteristics. And among SIFT, SURF, BRISK, and ORB algorithm, this paper proposes a outdoor scene recognition algorithm based on ORB, which has higher recognition rate and faster speed and satisfies the requirement of the proposed outdoor virtual tourism platform system.(2) On the basis of three-dimensional registration technique based on natural characteristics and homography, the paper puts forward a kind of three-dimensional registration algorithm based on improved homography matrix. The improved algorithm has higher registration rate and is more accurate to achieve three-dimensional registration. Meanwhile it meets the system requirements of the portable and real-time.(3) The paper chooses OpenGL to achieve the final mix module in order to meet the outdoor virtual tour system requirements of cross-platform. In the paper we research OpenGL model superposition principle and the process of drawing OBJ model, finally realize the seamless combination of virtual objects and reality scene and achieve augmented reality rendering.In order to verify the effect of the algorithm, this paper uses OpenCV and OpenGL database to design and develop the system. And the experiments prove that this system can be successfully implemented with the support of the above algorithms and has a good real-time performance, can achieve the desired effect of augmented reality.
