There are some drawbacks in the original design of the current Internet, such as service resources and location binding, service adaptation process ossification, etc. All these deficiencies make it difficult to meet the needs of the future information network. Therefore, countries in the world have paid great attention on future network research. Smart and cooperative network proposed by our research group is a new future network structure. By establishing identifier and location separation, resource and location separation, control and data separation, etc., a suite of feasible proposals is created to solve above issues. Based on the architecture of the smart and cooperative network, the theoretical and practical significance of designing and developing typical application (such as instant messaging) are obvious for validating the correctness, availability and superiority of network.The research goal of this paper is to design and implement an instant messaging platform based on the architecture of smart and cooperative network. The location of the service provider is no longer needed for the service requester, and the popular resource can be better obtained by the users in different network conditions.Firstly, the background and significance of this paper, main mechanisms of smart and cooperative network, service principle, prototype system, etc. are introduced.Secondly, based on the brief demand analysis of the instant messaging platform, three different implementation schemes are proposed. Both the advantages and disadvantages of each scheme are analyzed from architecture perspective and hybrid scheme are selected for further investigations.Thirdly, the hybrid scheme of instant messaging platform in smart and cooperative network is implemented. The general framework design and realization process of each functional module are detailed and analyzed. This instant messaging platform contains the many functions, such as registration, login, participants’ list management, instant message exchange, file transmission, exception reminder and so on. The implementation approaches and routing mechanisms are quite different with traditional instant messaging platform of current network. According to the service identifier based routing mechanisms in smart and cooperative network, the client network components are able to successfully obtain the relevant services without service providers’ locations. The routing hops and latencies of obtaining user network components’ services can be reduced by utilizing in-network caching schemes.Finally, functional test of instant messaging platform is achieved on the prototype system of smart and cooperative network. Three different scenarios, normal network, high latency and high bandwidth networks and a single congested point network, are employed in simulation tool for evaluating the file transmission performance of instant messaging platform and comparing the results with tradition network situations. The demonstration shows well usability and quality of experience. The research work presented in this paper can be utilized as the evaluation tool for further explorations of smart and cooperative network.
