The boundary tracing and area measure technology of leather refers to extract contour information, identify internal defects and calculate the available area from the leather surface,based on the captured image of leather. This technology can be widely used in leather industry, to increase production efficiency while reduce labor. The exact boundary and area are the important foundation for next works, such as typesetting and cutting.In this paper, we mainly focus on research about the technology of extract the contour and calculate the actual area of the leather. In order to calculate the actual area of leather, we proposed a method to place the checkerboard around the leather, and capture images of both leather and checkerboard. In the aspect of extract boundary, the paper presents a feasible technique processes. Finally complete the boundary tracing and area measure system. The main content of the work is as follows:1. Analysis different methods of extracting checkerboard corners, and using an appropriate algorithm to achieve the accurate corners position, and we proposed a way to accurately locate the four corners of a rectangular region which is surrounded by checkerboard. According to these corners, we can accomplish the image correction.2. Proposed a feasible technical process about extract contour and vectoring the contour sequence. The contour of leather can be obtained by morphological processing, and preserved by Freeman chain code. On the basis of the chain code, we can screening all the pixels on the chain code by calculate the field angle to get the characteristic points, finally we get the vector boundary.3. On the foundation of checkerboard corners and vector boundary, we can calculate the actual area of leather. Taking checkerboard corners as reference, we map the vector boundary points into the coordinate system established by checkerboard corners. Then triangulation the vector boundary, and calculate all the areas of triangles, the answer is the actual area of leather.4. In this paper, we design and implement a system, which can extract contours and calculate actual area of leather, the system provides a complete process from capture the image to finally export the boundary information. It presents the result of every step for users.
