Three-dimensional reconstruction technology is a method which transforms 2D data form CT, MRI and other medical imaging equipment to 3D data and reconstructs three-dimensional shape of human tissue with 3D data. The three-dimensional reconstruction of medical images in clinical diagnosis, surgical planning, treatment planning, blood flow simulation and medical education has been applied widely. Nowadays, cardiovascular disease is highest morbidity and mortality of disease. Meanwhile, vascular tree is the most complex tissue of human body. 3D vascular model with complete and effective visualization provide convenient and efficient help to make diagnosis and treatment plan of vascular diseases. Hence, visualization of vascular structures deserves special attention. These factors promote the development of vascular visualization technology. And it is also a research hotspot.Carotid artery visualization is an effective method for the diagnosis of intracranial aneurysms, vascular malformations of the brain, head and neck vascular variation, atherosclerosis and other diseases. So, it is useful to develop a carotid artery visualization platform. Contents of this paper come from the development of carotid visual platform. It concentrates on the research of 3D vascular reconstruction based on CTA data of carotid artery. Its ultimate goal is to obtain high quality carotid surface. In this paper, model-based and model-free surface visualization methods were used to reconstruct carotid artery. Model-based surface reconstruction was based on centre-line and radii of vessels. Then, this paper provided a simple and effective method to generate up vector. And it generated 3D carotid artery graphics through model-based reconstruction method. Model-free surface reconstruction was based on vessel segmentation result. It proposed point cloud extraction method from CT image and the appropriate evaluation method of vector. It achieved 3D carotid artery graphics with high accuracy through model-free reconstruction method. We tested the related parameters in model-free method. And we got appropriate range of these parameters.Finally, according to the results of model-based and model-free reconstruction method, we evaluated the surface quality of carotid artery and compared consumption time each other. Moreover, we analyzed separately the merits and drawbacks and discussed the field of application.
