With increasing development of businesses, continuous renewal and development of techniques and equipments for broadcast in television station is required. However, traditional timing systems are composed of GPS satellite calibration clock, time code calibrator, time code generator, and RS232 interface transmission devices etc. and these systems are not qualified any more to meet requirements for compatibility and system expansion of the new equipments and may result in safety loophole during program transmission. Therefore, a timing system basing on multi-element techniques was developed in this paper to keep up with the development pace of TV broadcast industry and to meet requirements for a highly qualified and safe broadcast, and this timing system has been adopted successfully by Guangxi TV station. The main research works carried out in this paper are inclusive of follows:Firstly, general design scenario for the system was carried out with the system framework, Ethernet timing proposal etc. included. Timing system mainly composed of GPS satellite calibration clock, time code distributor, time code generator and RS232 interface transmission devices etc. was determined and framework of the timing system, timing mode and the required communication transmission interface was determined as well.Then various timing protocol techniques like RS232, RS422, EBU and NTP etc. were adopted. Meanwhile, cluster management of integrated application for each protocol and subnets were carried out basing on adoption of various protocols. Design, research and development of multi-element timing system for Guangxi TV station was fulfilled and a multi-element timing system which possessed multi-element protocol support, integrated application, smart polling calibration function and in which timing subnets were realized with dispersed distribution, centralized management, security isolation and mutual backups etc. was developed successfully.Finally, the timing system that was developed was used and tested taking Guangxi TV station as the application platform. The result shows that: the system was operating properly and was stable, reliable, safe and highly efficient. Also, it was of strong integrated manageability and good expandability and could meet requirements for daily use, for coping with emergencies and major broadcast and totally met with design goal and requirements and guaranteed development and safety of the whole network for the TV station.
