3d sculpturing technique is a popular way for modeling 3d shapes and can generate complex models with rich embossed textures quickly and efficiently. This paper focuses on the 3d sculpturing method based on drawing lines, and also presents some methods for pre-processing the input line drawing and paper-cutting.The main work and achievements in this article are as follows:1) The input 2d image can be divided into two types, line drawing and paper-cutting. We extract the center lines of the line drawing and regard them as sculpturing contour lines. This step can simplify the representation of line drawing and also improve the subsequent 3d sculpturing operation. For the paper-cutting, we present a novel editable model---hierarchy representation model, which can express its hierarchical structures. We also present a bottom-to-top algorithm for converting the input paper-cutting into its hierarchy representation model. Owing to the hierarchy representation model, we provide three smart edit tools: global shape editing, local deformation and shape regularization. After the editing operations, the new boundaries of shapes can be regarded as sculpturing contour lines.2) Due to the extracted sculpturing contour lines, we should then determine the sculpturing areas on the 3d models. The sculpturing area then can be parameterized and the sculpturing contour lines will be mapped as the discrete sculpturing lines on the 3d models. The sculpturing vertices can be selected if their distance to the discrete sculpturing lines is less than a given threshold. Finally,the shift distance of these sculpturing vertices can be calculated by specific crease profiles and the3 d sculpturing result can be achieved by moving the sculpturing vertices along their normal direction.Our work proposes a new method for 3d model sculpturing technique based on drawing lines.It makes the pattern more colorful and more complex. Also, during the design or the transform processing, users’ interaction is less and easy. The experiment results illustrate that our 3d sculpturing method can generate some complex sculpturing results on different 3d models in aconvenient and efficient manner.
