Chinese Shadow play is a traditional art with a long history and it widely spread in the folk ever. But now, the development of shadow play is extremely slow, because of the impaction of the modern culture and its own limitation. In consequence, fewer and fewer people are willing to throw themselves into this traditional art, which is a n inconvenient truth. In the modern society, science and technology are advancing by leaps and bounds, especially in the areas of computer science. Digitalized shadow play animation has become the new way to protect shadow play.It is obvious that the Chinese shadow play is a somatosensory interactive system, we proposed some gesture recognition algorithms with low-price, high accuracy and strong expansibility, to improve the interactive performance of C hinese shadow play system and enhance user experience. The three algorithms describe in this paper are based on K inect sensor, which is the motion sensing input device for Xbox 360. The definition of the effective gesture recognition area can judge the initial position and the final position of the gesture. After that we choose the template matching methods to recognize the gesture. The algorithm that able to recognize the direction of gestures and normalize the gestures by resample, rotating, scaling and translating before calculate the minimum matching, named Directional correlated single-gesture recognition algorithm in this paper. Another algorithm is three-dimensional gesture recognition algorithm, which recognition method is consisted of resample, scaling and calculating the Euclidean distance. The last algorithm in this paper is double-handed gesture recognition which need to redefine the effective recognition area and base on the directional correlated single- gesture recognition algorithm.The following has been accomplished in the paper: First, introduce the integration frame-work of the C hinese shadow play system; second, explain the combination method of K inect sensor and recognition algorithms; third, describe three gesture recognition algorithms and display the accuracy for each of them; last, show the effect of gesture interactive in the C hinese shadow play system and the investigation result of the user experience.With the addition of the gesture recognition algorithms presented in the paper, the Chinese shadow play system is improved to be more practicable and expandable...
