In recent years, wireless sensor networks have been widely used in many areas such as military, environmental protection, medical care and smart home, and become a hot research topic in the field of computer. Coverage control is one of the basic factor in determining the quality of service of networks, coverage means that supervision area should be covered by deploying a certain number of sensors to sense the monitored space and detect targets, so that wireless sensor networks can accomplish the integrity and effectiveness of the available information. However, most research about coverage control problems are focus on the traditional omni-directional sensing model, in the real application, there exists some new type sensors, such as video sensor, infrared sensor and ultrasonic sensor, and the traditional perception model is not suitable for the directional sensor. This paper analyses the coverage control problem for directional sensor networks and the main contributions are as follows:1. Firstly, we propose a model between the force and the adjustable angle through the force analysis among each node. The model takes the effect of the overlap area into account, the greater the area overlapped, the bigger the repulsive force, so the larger the adjustable angle should be, the model overcomes the deficiency of the fixed adjustable angle.2. Secondly, the model between the force and the adjustable angle is applied to the particle swarm optimization for search the solution to the coverage optimization for direction sensor networks. The improved particle swarm algorithm speeds up the track for the individual and global optimization, shortens the time to adjust the direction and overcomes the deficiency of the long time for search the best direction of the sensors.3. Thirdly, we adopt the linear programming optimization algorithm to solve the deterministic deployment problem for directional sensor networks. Under the premise of reducing the actual number of node deployment and decreasing the cost of the whole network, the network is able to object target and meet for the required performance.4. Finally, by applying the improved coverage control algorithm to design the video monitoring system of the smart home, then develop the video monitoring system software. Due to the application of the control coverage algorithm, it effectively improving the monitoring area and decreasing the number of the node deployment.
