The coverage optimization is one of the key issue and research focus of target monitoring applications which is based on wireless sensor network(WSN). In traditional sensor networks, coverage optimization technology has accumulated many research achievements. In recent years, with the emergence of new types of sensor networks, existing coverage optimization method can not be applied effectively. It urgently needs us to design a series of new coverage optimization methods. Therefore, this paper puts forward a new algorithm which is based on directional sensing model, area coverage enhancement and other issues. At last, we give performance analysis and simulation results.At First, this paper introduces the concept of directional sensor networks and the basic theory, and describes a directional sensing model. Its sensing range is a limited angle of sector region.Secondly, aimed at in the presence of obstacles exist in the monitored area, introducing a kind of obstacle avoidance strategy, this paper proposes a PCMOD (potential field based coverage optimization algorithm to multi-obstacle scene for directional sensor networks).The algorithm is based on the directional sensing model, through the interaction among coverage overlapping regions, the effective coverage regions and obstacles block regions, increased network coverage was quickly achieved by gradually eliminating coverage overlapping regions and blind regions. The experimental results on MATLAB show that the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.Once more, this paper further presents a virtual potential field based boundary treatment method for boundary nodes distributed in the boundary region. This method improves the boundary condition by adding a neighbor node in the boundary line, through the interaction of a virtual force between the centroids to make sensor network coverage enhanced. The MATLAB simulation tool was conducted to validate the feasiblity of the proposed algorithm.At last, this paper proposes a particle swarm algorithm based coverage optimization algorithm for three-dimensional directional sensor networks based on 3D directional sensing model. The algorithm establishes a new three-dimensional model and adjusts the direction of the sensor nodes by PSO to allow nodes more evenly distributed in the monitoring region. The MATLAB simulation tool was conducted to validate the feasiblity of the proposed algorithm. The experimental results indicate that the particle swarm algorithm applied to three-dimensional model help to improve the monitoring of information in three-dimensional space and the perceived quality of service.
