As an auxiliary production system, the pump units are pervasively used in metallurgy, petroleum, chemical, textile, power, light industry and mining enterprises. However, there exist some common practical problems such as large power consumption, low efficiency and obsolescence of pump units in these industries. Accordingly, this situation leads to the lower overall energy efficiency of the equipment, therefore leaves great potential for energy savings. Due to the lack of simple and effectively scientific assessment system, the energy efficiency assessment of pump units in our country generally remains passive and intermittent style. In view of the severe energy situation and non-optimistic energy efficiency problem of pump units, it will have important theoretical significance and application value to research on the quick and accurate assessment of energy efficiency of the equipment and develop an easy-to-use evaluating system, which will provide the correct decision-making reference for energy conservation.Research on the energy efficiency assessment of pump units, can be divided into three parts:motor’s, coupling’s, and water pump’s. Moreover, we deeply analyzed not only the structure of the pump units but also the operating principle and energy consumption in each part of the pump units. Besides, we conducted extensive research on the construction of energy efficiency assessment model, and presented case study.Firstly, the basic characteristics of pump units are analyzed. We introduced the classification, structure principle and related parameters of the motors, couplings and pumps. Afterwards, we analyzed the relationship between each part of the system and determined the specific objects of energy efficiency evaluation, which establishes the foundation of constructing an energy efficiency assessment model.Secondly, assessment methods of the energy efficiency of motors are conducted. Under the basis of the fundamental characteristics of the electric motors, we conducted its energy consumption analysis and built the energy efficiency assessments model. Because the existing methods affect the normal operation of the motor to some extents, they are not suitable for the online assessment. Therefore, the particle swarm optimization algorithm is employed to identify the motor parameters, which achieves the online assessment of energy efficiency of motors. The above research work lays the foundation and ideas for further research to assess the energy efficiency of the pump units.Again, we did some research on assessment methods of the energy efficiency for motors and couplings. The negative balance method is used for assessing the energy efficiency of couplings, and also the thermodynamic method is applied to the energy efficiency analysis of motors. Consequently, the energy efficiency assessments model is established. Under this basis, a case study of energy efficiency assessment is presented.Finally, a software tool of energy efficiency assessment system for pump units is designed and developed. Based on the assessment methods of energy efficiency and case study above, we designed and developed the automatic energy efficiency assessment system for pump units. What’s more, this system is introduced in two aspects including system design and functional implement.
