The character models are three-dimensional virtual models that are similar to the real human bodies based on digital technology and computer technology. At present, There is a lot of methods to control the virtual character movement, such as keyframes, motion capture methods, etc. However, these methods are inefficient whose control complexities and computational loads are very high, and cannot be widespreadly applied. Therefore, study on motion control of virtual characters model based on Kinect is meaningful for practical application. Two methods are studied in this paper to control the movement of virtual characters base on Kinect equipments and Unity platform. The first is gestrure recognition based movement control of virtual characters. Three-dimensional grinding workshop is taken as test scenario in this experiment. Four-kind attitude corresponding to four motion state of the robot model are designed. Gesture recognition technology is used to control the virtual character movement and change the state of motion in three-dimensional grinding workshop. In addition, a series of functional modules of Unity are designed to make the virtual character in the industrial scene retrieve device and image data, play production video, simulate the collision process, and so on, which is helpful to implement the digital management of three-dimensional grinding workshop. Second, Kinect depth camera is used to collect the depth information in field of view. In detail, the human edge profile in depth information is detected, and the user’s image and background information are separated to detect and locate the user’s key points. The human joints are mapped to three-dimensional model joints by initializing and seting the rotation information of joints. Finally, the virtual characters can be controled by the users’ synchronized movements successfully.Based on kinds of expreriments, the above control ways for virtual character models designed in this paper shows good interactivities, practicalities and funs. The above studies have a good reference for the development of motion control virtual characters.
