This topic is for quality inspection departments to measure the wire and cable insulation and sheath thickness studies. Wire and cable plays an important role in national economic development, the quality of wire and cable related to personal and property safety of the people. Therefore, the detection is crucial for the quality of wire and cable products, wire and cable insulation and sheath thickness is one of a very important test items. Currently, the main use of the projector to measure the thickness of the wire and cable insulation and sheath, it needs to put the slice of insulation or sheath on at least 10 times larger projectors, then to measure the shadow by hand. This method has low accuracy, slow, tedious boring, affected by human factors and other shortcomings, the post-data processing increased labor intensity, reduced efficiency. With the detection of demand for wire and cable products growing, current measurement methods has been difficult to meet the demand. In recent years, the rapid development of machine vision technology improves the degree of automation in many areas. Machine vision technology has speed, high precision, not affected by man-made factors and other characteristics. In this paper, we propose a new measurement method, designed a wire and cable insulation and sheath measurement system based on machine vision. The main contents are as follows:1. Introduced overall design scheme of the measurement system, Including the hardware design and software design. The light source, lens, camera and other hardware are analyzed and selected to build a test platform for the measurement system.2. Study on some common image processing methods in image measurement system, through the experiment of the image filtering, image segmentation, edge detection methods, comparison and analysis the advantages and disadvantages of various algorithms to select the appropriate algorithm for this topic. Finally, we select the mathematical morphology filtering method for image filtering, using bimodal method for image segmentation, using canny edge detection operator to extract the edge contour. To meet the requirements of precision measurement, also discussed a variety of common sub-pixel edge detection methods.3. Introduced the measurement system calibration method, calibration coefficients k obtained. In accordance with national standard GB/T2951.11-2008, we designed the thickness measurement method. First, find out the thinnest point of thickness. Then measure other points at some angle interval. Finally, the measurement points added to calculate the arithmetic mean value. Take matlab as the platform to write program of image processing and thickness measurement.4. Using the measurement system to do thickness measurements of different shapes of insulation and sheath. The result compared with the conventional measurement method, proved that the measurement system designed in this paper high accuracy, measurement speed, and highly practical.
