Some basic indicators of morphology of plant fiber include fiber length, width, coarseness, cellwall and lumen ratio, length distribution etc., which have a great influence on the quality of paper and pulp. At the same time, fiber morphology is also an important basis to formulate for pulping and papermaking process. Besides, the fiber types can be determined by characteristic parameters of fiber morphology, which can identify the paper products in a certain extent.Four kinds of fibers including mason pine fiber, eucalyptus fiber, wheat straw fiber and bamboo fiber were selected and analyzed. Firstly, the basic information of the raw materials was analyzed and sorted, and the data of the morphological features such as fiber length and width was obtained by Morfi fiber quality analyzer, and the length and width were determined as the main parameters to study. Then the micro images of fibers were obtained by the fiber photographed under a microscope, with special technical requirement of the image format, image pixel and the dispersion and the number of fibers in the image.Secondly, the pretreatment on the fiber image was studied through the image processing toolbox in MATLAB, which included image conversion, histogram equalization, image denoising, image edge detection and image binaryzation, among which, the effect of median filter and mean filter on the noise elimination of fiber image was mainly compared, and several methods of edge detection algorithms were also comparatively studied. Then, the gray images of fibers were analyzed, and the morphological characteristics of fibers were comparatively studied through the gray level histogram and the gray image, at the same time, the morphological characteristics of fibers were also comparatively studied after binaryzation of the gray image. The gray characteristic value of fiber images was studied, obtaining the gray value and gray variance of four kinds of fibers, the gray value of which were 187.33, 179.61, 167.76, and 188.68 for mason pine fiber, eucalyptus fiber, wheat straw fiber and bamboo fiber, respectively; and the gray variance of which were 27.90, 37.80, 27.28, and 20.74 for mason pine fiber, eucalyptus fiber, wheat straw fiber and bamboo fiber, respectively. In addition, the calculation of fiber length and width of the fiber image was studied, and the practical significance of the measurement of fiber length and width through the image analysis. The results showed that the calculation was affected by fiber integrity and other reasons, and the practical significance of the measurement of single fiber length through image was little; while the fiber width could be accurately measured through the image, the deviation of which was only about 10%, so it had certain practical significance. The results of four kinds of fibers width were mason pine 27.6μm, 19.3μm, 19.4μm and 13.2μm for mason pine fiber, eucalyptus fiber, wheat straw fiber and bamboo fiber, respectively. Finally, according to the gray value, gray variance and fiber width of fiber images, a program was written through MATLAB to identify differential fiber types, which could identify four kinds of fibers selected for this paper. And after repeated verification by Morfi fiber quality analyzer, we can be sure that the accuracy rate of this program on the fiber type identification was above 80%.
