VM migration technology allows VM to change its place in physical machines during runtime in IaaS based on which dynamic VM placement provides flexible man-agement of resource. Traditional techniques for dynamic VM placement often opti-mize the allocation of resource regarding to the platform infomation like energy and SLA without considering the characteristics of the applications deployed in VMs, so the requirement may not be satisfied in some specific senarios. Respecting the limi-tations we proposed an application oriented framework for dynamic VM placement. The framework mainly focused on seperate the resource plane and the control plane. We implemented the framework on top of OpenStack and conducted experiments to evaluate its effectiveness. The work can be summarized as follows:1. Based on analyzing the limitation of current approches for dynamic VM place-ment, we seperate the resource plane and control plane using policies to manage the process of dynamic VM placement and propose an application oriented con-cept framework in IaaS.2. We proposed a extended framework for resource plane in IaaS. We extended the original services by a coarse-gained abstraction of dynamic VM placement and provided monitor service, resource select service and resoure control service.3. We proposed an ECA rule based machanism for dynamic VM placement. We mapped the event, condition and action part of an ECA rule to different steps of dynamic VM placement, used CLIPS as our rule engine, solved the reliance and confliction between different rules and provided a unified programming in-terface.4. We extended the OpenStack platform to support dynamic VM placement. In addition, We evaluated the effectiveness of our system by conducting experi-ments using three types of applications:data-intensive, compute-intensive and network-sensitive.
