Uncompressed image data is very huge, not only against the computer storage but also be unfavorable to network transmission, which makes the image compression has become the inevitable demand of people. Image compression technology has brought great convenience to people’s life, and thus become the hot topic of current research. With the rapid development of embedded technology, highly integrated chip made that in the past we need a computer to complete the complicate task, but now we only need a small development board to complete; And image compression technology progress, make a picture contains a large amount of data of images can be compressed smaller and smaller.This paper is the combination of embedded technology and image compression technology. Firstly, I studied image compression technology, including the theoretical basis of image data compression, the types of the redundancy of the image and the way of image data compression, based on the research of the mainstream image compression encoding method,pick out the most representative of JPEG compression standard and the JPEG2000compression standards to elaborate, in-depth analysis of their theoretical basis, characteristics and the specific algorithm implementation steps:Secondly, I researched embedded development technology:including the hardware selection of OK6410embedded development platform, environment building, bootloader analysis, compilation of embedded Linux kernel, compile yaffs2file, cross compile the application, etc.; finally, I studied image acquisition technology based on V4L2. JPEG compression standard adopts jpeglib library, and based on JPEG2000compression standards upon Jasper libraries, including their common interface and structure, and commonly used functions. When I fully understood the JPEG and JPEG2000image compression theory and mastered the basis of embedded development process, cross-compiling the application to OK6410, implementation of image acquisition, compression, and storage. After get the result of the experiment, summarizing the characteristics of discrete cosine transform and discrete wavelet transform, the comparative analysis of their advantages and disadvantages, combining with the specific application scenario from my own view.
