Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Network (RPL) is an IPv6routing protocol for LLNs proposed by ROLL working group of IETF. As a significant part in the next generation of Internet-of-Things, RPL is still under development and open to improvements. There is a need to study the performance of RPL and how to implement it in different application scenarios, considering its potential applications in Smart Healthcare and transportation areas.RPL’s main responsibility is collecting data and information. So whether the packets can be successfully transferred to delivery messages is the most important part of the protocol, which makes the packet loss ratio become the key performance indicator of this paper. Besides, different kinds of data traffic are used in those WSN’s application fields, but there’s not enough research of it. So the performance of RPL in different data traffic scenarios is our main target. Our analysis is based on the ContikiRPL accurate and realistic simulation model with Cooja simulator in Contiki operating system. Firstly we learn the topology and parameters with better performance through simulations of different cases. Then we choose burst data traffic scenario and evaluate the performance of both OFO and MRHOF. And we also propose a new OF named Loop-Avoid MRHOF which largely improve loss ratio and loops situation.
