Wireless sensor network is a new technology related with computers, communications and microelectronics. With the continuous researching and practicing, the range of wireless sensor network’s application is more and more larger, such as military, commercial and civilian fields. Wireless sensor network is usually deployed in the area which have no human, bad environ-ments and even enemy positions, so protection for the data in wireless sensor network is very important.Because of the limitation of the node’s memory, computation ability and battery power, some traditional security solutions are not suitable for wireless sensor networks. Although some solutions are proposed for wireless sensor networks and have a good protection, it will bring some stable energy burden. When the node’s battery is low, it’s efficiency will be affected.This paper, based on the disadvantage of stable energy burden brought by encryption and authentication solutions, research the RC5algorithm and design an energy adaptive encryption and authentication system for wireless sensor networks. The main work including:Firstly, summarizing the characteristics of wireless sensor networks and analyzing it’s security status. By reading some relevant literatures, summari-zing the encryption and authentication solutions for wireless sensor networks, then compare and analyze them. Secondly, researching the technology of encryption and authentication, and proposing an energy adaptive encryption and authentication solution for wireless sensor networks. Using RC5algorithm to encrypt and authenticate data, and based on the energy adaptive strategy, selecting the RC5algorithm’s parameters by the battery power. Then, designing an energy adaptive encryption and authentication system for wireless sensor networks. By using CC2430nodes and Zigbee2006protocol, the system can collect and upload temperature data. Besides, the nodes can select work mode through energy adaptive strategy by watching the battery power.Finally, writing the nodes’ program, building a real wireless sensor network to realize the system, and doing experiments in the environment. The result shows that the energy adaptive encryption and authentication system for wireless sensor networks can protect data’s confidentiality and integrality, and the nodes can adjust energy burden dynamically according to the energy adaptive strategy so that to increase working hours.
