While the Internet developing at a faster and faster rate and contacting more and more fields, it provides much more applications and contents for users. More and more users of the broadcast networks turn their attention to the Internet. After the development in recent years, more and more families have the set-top box with two-way interactive ability. How to use the existing platform to develop new business, to provide more choices of the applications and richer contents for the users, to attract the users’attention back to the broadcast network, is the urgent problem to be solved for the broadcast network operators. This paper introduces a new solution that by using the concept of cloud computing, the terminal’s processing ability and image rendering capability are stripped to the cloud. The terminal only needs to have the basic network interactive ability and the ability of decoding audio and video. The cloud completes the application’s calculation, processing and image rendering, and then codes the results into video stream. After that, the video stream is transferred to the terminal through the HFC network. The terminal will decode the stream and present it to the user. Most of the current domestic set-top boxes have the hardware capabilities required by the program. So the broadcast network operators don’t need to carry out large scale terminal upgrades for the users to provide more applications and richer contents. And this program can guarantee that the application contents of the broadcast networks are under control and the copyrights of the applications are protected well. The NGOD architecture is one that supports video on demand service used on broadcast networks. This architecture divides the function into some modules carefully and reasonably. And it provides the specification of various interfaces. This architecture has strong scalability. So it can support a variety of business expansion. In order to protect the old services from affecting by the new business, this paper has carried on the expansion according to the NGOD architecture specification. We increase the application server module, the application server manager module and the interfaces needed by the new modules.Application servers provide a platform for cloud applications running on. We implement application virtualization on the servers to deploy application rapidly and reduce the consumptions. The application server manager is responsible for managing and allocating the resources of the application servers. This paper implements a resource allocation strategy to make full use of the resources of the application servers and maintain load balancing between servers.
