With the rapid development of the communication technology and network technology, the bottleneck of the current Internet performance is no longer the network link, but gradually becomes the router. In this case, the router needs to guarantee itself can be working reliably. The most effective method to ensure the reliability of the router is to take forward fault detection on router, once found faults on the router; it can repair the faults in time. At the same time, the architecture of the router has evolved from centralized single processor architecture to the distributed architecture, the traditional method to detect forward fault not only has a higher price to achieve, but also cannot meet on the requirement of availability and reliability on the router.Today, aiming at the forward fault detection technology of router, every router manufacturer has its own solution. In this paper. based on the H3C’s distributed core router-CR16000, the paper proposes an advanced dynamic real-time fault diagnosis method with the study on main current fault diagnosis methods. It also accomplished a forward fault detection system based on this method. This fault detection system can detect the fault when forwarding packets, find the inoperable chip, and repair in time, so it can effectively improve the availability and reliability of router. In this paper, firstly, it describes the background of this project, and the work I have done in this project and paper. Then, it introduces the project development techniques including the CLOS architecture of CR16000core router, the fault detection diagnosis techniques and the network operating system-H3C Comware. Then, followed by a general overview of the fault detection framework in CR16000core router, it leads to the forward fault detection system’s requirements analysis and overall design. After that, it describes the design and implementation of the path detection module and fault diagnosis module of this system; it is the emphasis of this paper. In the end, the paper summarizes the completed word and then introduces the prospect of the project.
