The aim of this paper is to investigate the performance of the latest objective speech quality assessment algorithms. In the communication system, the quality of speech is an important factor to evaluate the performance of the system. In order to achieve speech quality assessment, it is necessary to develop effective speech quality assessment method.The perceptive speech quality objective assessment algorithm is the most useful and convenient method. The Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality algorithm (PESQ algorithm) is the most prevalent one in these years. And the Perceptual objective listening quality assessment algorithm (POLQA algorithm) is designed to address the shortcoming and weakness that existed in previous published algorithms such as PESQ. In this paper we will discuss the PESQ algorithm and the POLQA algorithm, which are the latest ITU standard for evaluating speech quality for communication systems and networks.Firstly, this paper have studied and implemented the PESQ algorithm, and analyzed the performance of the PESQ algorithm, followed by the study of the POLQA algorithm. It is an upgrade technology covering latest speech coding and network transport technologies, with higher accuracy for3G,4G/LTE and VoIP networks. And then, the comparison of the POLQA algorithm and the PESQ algorithm has been given. From the result of the experiment data, it can be concluded that the performance of the POLQA algorithm is better than that of the PESQ algorithm, and the POLQA algorithm will replace the PESQ algorithm in the future. In order to improve the performance of the PESQ algorithm in the Chinese environment, this paper proposes a new objective evaluation algorithm by using ERB-scale to take the place of Bark-scale frequency. At last, in the VoIP system, the performance of the amend PESQ algorithm when applying to3different codecs named EVRC, EVRC-B and AMR has been analyzed. The results demonstrate that the amend algorithm can improve the accuracy of the measurement in the Chinese environment.
