Due to the reason that fixed wavelength grid cannot make full use of the network resources and cannot dynamic adjust according to the real time stimulation, in the recent years, more and more attention have been focused on flexible grid optical network instead of the traditional WDM optical network. This new kind of network can allocate spectrum resource according to the data rate of the service request appropriately and adjust the network parameters dynamically. But there are still some urgent problems to be solved in flexible grid optical network. With the increase of network traffic load, the number of guard band will be a sharp increase as well as spectrum defragmentation which results in wasting of spectrum resources and reducing resource utilization. To solve these problems, we can use traffic grooming skills to improve network performance.This paper focuses on the traffic grooming based on the key technologies of flexible grid optical networks. In the course of the study, we analyze and summarize the traditional theoretical ideas and methods and determine the research direction of this paper. The main achievements are as follows:Firstly, we summarize the background of traditional WDM optical networks and introduce flexible grid optical network. Then we design and implement multi-layer and multi-domain PCE-based flexible optical network architecture. In this kind of network, the traffic load could be dynamic scheduling.Secondly, we implement the PCE module, including coordination mechanism and the extensions of PCEP protocol. In this paper, through the study of simulation system based on the architecture, we prove that with the use of PCE, the whole network resources can be centrally managed and PCE becomes to a key module during traffic grooming.Based on previous research, we propose merging optical grooming algorithms which can reduce the numbers of guard band during dynamic processing. Even more, to making the spectrum become much neater we also propose a unit split grooming algorithms. From the result of simulation, it proves that these two kinds of algorithms can really improve the performance of the network and make better use of spectrum resources.
