The Chinese character is the symbol of the Chinese civilization, and has walked along with the Chinese civilization through ages. On one hand, it recorded the ups and downs of the Chinese civilization through thousands of years, while on the other hand, the character also evolves and develops all the time under the macro background of such a great civilization. In addition, the formation and evolution of the character represent one of the splendid climaxes of the Chinese civilization. Therefore, the study on the characters can help have a better understanding on the profound Chinese civilization, and to some extent, the study is also an extension of the Chinese civilization.Since the ancient Chinese character is the origin of the Chinese character, it obviously became very important to study on its ancestor, i.e. the ancient Chinese character. Not only the study can help explore the Chinese civilization in terms of the acknowledgement on the ancient Chinese politics, economy and culture etc., but also it can help us find out the evolution rule of the Chinese characters. Therefore the study can play an enormous role on the making of the Chinese characters standard.When we talk about ancient inscriptions, we are referring to the characters that exist before the Qin(included) dynasty. The most well-known ones are inscriptions on oracle bones and bronze objects. Just as the names implies, those inscriptions are recorded on animal bones (shells), or bronze wares. If we sort out by ages, ancient inscriptions can also be classified as Shang script, Western Zhou script and Warring States script.The ancient inscriptions have these particular attributes as follows:(1)in the form of inscriptions and rubbings.(2)have a long history.(3)only remain in China.(4)require professional knowledge background to be studied at Due to these attributes there are only a few of the electrical materials of the ancient inscriptions exist, what’s more, the current existing e-materials can only be saved in the form of images or images saved in word files.As Chinese civilization is profound and has a long history, the quantity of the ancient inscriptions is in a large amount. Also the writing of an ancient character differs in different ages, different regions. Sometimes, it can be totally different in different regions in same ages. In short, there are plenty of variant characters exist.(In ancient inscription, variant refers to different writings on characters when it comes to creating the characters caused by the differences on characters creation methods and structure categories. In this paper, it particularly refers to different writings of one character. Same as below).Nowadays, due to the fact that the analyses of the ancient inscriptions are based on the pattern and structure, it’s obviously important to find out the basis of research on some script from a huge number of ancient Chinese inscriptions. While the computer has a distinctive advantage:(1)can "memory" the ancient Chinese characters which have been found.(2)can quickly find out characters that share similarities according to the pattern and structures.Due to the fact that there are a huge number of ancient characters and they are not as regular as the modern characters, this paper chooses to focus on the Shang and Zhou bronze inscription, that is inscriptions on bronze wares during the Shang and Zhou period, in short, Shang and Zhou bronze inscription. It aims to explore the regularity in order to establish the management and recognition system of Shang and Zhou bronze inscription. The innovation points are as follows.(1) Cross-disciplinary, to research and solve the problem of one subject by utilizing another subject’s methods.(2) Find out the fact that both the Shang and Zhou bronze inscription and its variant are the correct writings. Nowadays, when people are studying and writing Shang and Zhou bronze inscription, they all try to copy the inscription for consistency, which helps create the method of image recognition via pixels comparison.(3) To create a character recognition method with the characteristics of components and grids through the research of Shang and Zhou bronze inscription and grapheme while combining the understanding of the book "Word and Explanation".
