The thesis intends to investigate entirely and thoroughly the encyclopedia of Sui and Tang Dynasties in the background of encyclopedia history in ancient China. The thesis includes eight chapters.As the rise period of China ancient encyclopedia in Wei-Jin, Southern&Northern Dynasties, the ways and theory of compiling have been established, and the official and personal encyclopedia have made some progress. The encyclopedia of that period have scattered and disappeared. As the intensive study carried on, the research of Dun Huang encyclopedia helps to reveal the whole development of encyclopedia of Wei-Jin period. And the findings lay the foundation of intensive study of encyclopedia of Sui and Tang Dynasties.The encyclopedia of Sui and Tang Dynasties are the basis of boom period in Song Dynasty. The development of encyclopedia of Sui and Tang Dynasties depends on the rulers' decisions of compiling documents in flourishing age, the fusion of culture and system, the improvement of imperial examination system and need of inquiry of different knowledge. “Shi Wen Yi Ti”, the new compiling way which combines encyclopedia with collections of essays is the new feature in Sui and Tang Dynasties. Less than ten encyclopedia remains now, and four of those, “Bei Tang Shu Chao”, “Yi Wen Lei Ju”, “Chu Xue Ji” and “Bai Shi Liu” Tie represent the supreme achievements and play a role part in the history of China ancient encyclopedia.The taxonomic theory improves gradually, including the form of encyclopedic idea, establishment of documents application, evolution of taxonomic idea and change of bibliography taxonomy.
