As is well-known to us, with the great development and reformation of Chinese highereducation, and with the combination and rebuilding of colleges and universities of differentclasses and degrees, Chinese higher education has undergone such a considerable change thatboth the infrastructure and the teaching environment and conditions have been greatly improved.Meanwhile, campus network came into being in all kinds of colleges and universities in ourcountry. As campus network was then at its initial stage, colleges and universities not onlyexchanged mutually, but competed with each other as well. Some colleges and universities evenattempted to set up the best campus networks at tremendous costs. It is for this very reason thatthe scale and level of campus network are regarded as a significant symbol of measuring thecomprehensive strength of higher learning. However, the cost of early construction and the latermaintaining is so high that some colleges and universities have to shoulder great financialburdens. Moreover, the performance and the technical indexes are not very high because theearly network technology is immature. In recent years, with the rapid development of electronictechnique and the combination of computer technology and telecommunication technology,network has forwarded with leaps and bounds. All kinds of new-typed network equipment havesprung one after another. This has already made the original network in a backward situation thatthey have to renew and update their equipments, which causes great financial pressure. Thereforeif colleges and universities had not had a reasonable assessment and demonstration, building thenetwork simply for the purpose of unrealistic competition with others in seeking just for largescale, good equipment and best brand before they begin to set up the campus network, collegesand universities, and even the whole nation would suffer a great loss when the old networksystems are updated or eliminated.Thus, colleges and universities should base their network building on the actual need, andshould set up the most suitable, scientific and reasonable campus network, which I will advocateconsistently. The thesis probes into all the related issues that are concerned about in the construction of the campus network in the College of Foreign Language Studies, LiaoningUniversity, such as the goals, scale, basic principles, network requirements; cabling of thenetwork construction and network equipment designing so as to warn people not to pursue theconstruction scale blindly, or just focus on advancement instead of practicability, or just on theexpense in early construction rather than the maintenance in later period. It is quite likely tocause financial burden if we can not ensure the good maintenance of the network. In addition, weshould not attach any extravagant hope to settling the construction once and forever. Networktechnology is advancing with fantastic paces, and the network equipment updates increasingly,so even the very advanced equipment would fall behind soon and will also be faced with thesame problems, which are quite inevitable.
