Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Network (RPL) is proposed for WSN based on IPV6architecture. The traditional WSN protocol such ZigBee, has a bad compatibly with IP. An extra gateway is needed to connect the WSN and outside Internet, making the system quite complicated. However, the new IP architecture WSN, performs much better in commonality and Extensibility. The present RPL chooses min hop count as the only routing metric, resulting in fast energy exhaust for the nodes around Sink. To balance energy consumption and relieve data pressure for the nodes around Sink, a new routing strategy EERPL which combines hop count with remaining energy is proposed. Data prefers routing with more remaining energy to achieve better energy balance and longer network lifetime. For monitoring in bad condition, changing battery frequently is almost impossible. Making the network work as long as possible is very important. Along with the development of energy harvest technology, it becomes possible to introduce solar power in WSN. An energy harvested routing protocol-EHRPL is proposed in this thesis, exploring how to make solar-power nodes and battery nodes work together to take advantage solar power in daytime and ensure proper function at night. The basic working principle of RPL is introduced at the beginning of this passage, then comes the routing strategy EERPL combining hop count and remaining energy, then followed by newly proposed routing protocol-EHRPL. Computer simulation has shown that the improved protocols achieve much better results in network performance.
