As one of the most important technology in the third technical revolution, optical fiber communication system has been used worldwide in the past30years. With the remarkable improvement of related devices and technology, such as time division multiplexing, wavelength division multiplexing, polarization division multiplexing and multi-level modulation, optical fiber communication system has obtained considerable development, which changes the way we live and work profoundly.Starting with optical fiber, we elaborate and explore the development history of optical fiber communication system, as well as the breakthroughs in increasing the fiber transmission capacity. However, there is a bottleneck that blocks the development of optical fiber communication system. The transmission capacity of optical fiber will approach its theoretical upper limit, which makes it difficult to improve the information transmission speed further. In order to solve this problem, we emphatically study the multi-core optical fiber, which has drawn extensive attention in recent years. In this paper, we take the trench-assisted7-core optical fiber as research object and theoretically analyze the bending loss and crosstalk between different cores. Moreover, the effects of trench-assisted structure on transmission properties such as cutoff wavelength, bending loss and chromatic dispersion, as well as on the crosstalk between different cores are discussed by numerical calculation. These results are of guidance for the design of low bending loss, low crosstalk and high core density multi-core optical fiber. Finally, this paper theoretically helps us put multi-core optical fiber into practical application.
