With the continuous development of Internet technology, the IP traffic in the network has been showing explosive growth trend. This not only requires the optical backbone networks which is based on Wavelength-Division Multiplexing technology a higher capacity, but also and the aggravation of the energy consumption limits the prospect of the network. So the concept of green optical network has been initiated in recent years. As one of the key technologies to build a green optical network, traffic grooming technology has attracted much attention. However, with the diversification of Internet applications, many-to-many traffic such as multimedia video conference is gradually emerging. Each participant of a many-to-many traffic request requires to distribute and receive traffic from all the other participants in the same request. A large number of many-to-many traffic requests not only raise a higher requirement on the usage of network resources such as bandwidth and optical transceiver ports, but also will consume a large amount of energy to establish connections. Therefore the research on many-to-many traffic grooming algorithm in green optical network has great significance. This thesis builds a network model which supports many-to-many traffic grooming, and describes the problem of many-to-many traffic grooming in green optical network. To solve this problem, this thesis establishes a brand new grooming graph model which could fully reflect the energy consumption of each equipment in the network, and then proposes Power Efficient Many-to-Many Grooming Algorithm (PEMMGA). PEMMGA considers the selection of logical routes and the allocation of wavelengths on physical paths uniformly, and chooses different method to establish connection for different many-to-many traffic request based on its specific parameters. PEMMGA can use the network resources such as bandwidth and optical transceiver ports more efficiently, and establish connections for more many-to-many traffic requests with less energy consumption. To test and verify the performance of PEMMGA, this thesis developes a software platform for many-to-many traffic grooming in WDM optical network. Simulation results show that, in terms of energy consumption and utilization of network resources, PEMMGA reflects a good performance under various network conditions in different network topologies, and its energy consumption per bandwidth has dropped by12%-33%compared with traditional algorithms. So it can be used as a valuable reference to build a green optical network.
