Photonic crystal fiber (PCF) stands out from the large number of fibers because itscladding has special structure and it can be controlled. PCF quickly developed into a hotresearch field of optical fiber communication and optical fiber sensing. Surface plasmonresonance (SPR) sensor technology has wide application in biological, chemical,environmental, medical and many other areas that are closely related to people’s lives. In thispaper, SPR technology combined with PCF is used for sensing. This paper designed a varietyof PCF sensing structures based on SPR and analyzed their sensing properties very detailedly.These efforts provide theoretical reference for future studies of PCF sensor based on SPR.They have important academic significance.This article used the finite element method (FEM) and total internal reflection PCF. Themain contents are as follows:(1) Introduced the concept and properties of PCF and described the status of PCF sensor.(2) Derived the wave equation of light waves in the PCF. Then briefly introduced severalcommon numerical simulations of PCF, but it focused on the FEM. The article summarizedthe general steps of the FEM for problem solving and derived the finite element equation.(3) Summarized the SPR and its principles. Then introduced the current development ofthe PCF sensor based on SPR and proposed the design of author. Described COMSOLMultiphysics modeling process based on the FEM and setted the parameters.(4) Given the fundamental mode of PCF mode field distribution and calculated theeffective refractive index which is a complex. Analyzed the relationship between the real partof effective refractive index and the wavelength. At the same time, studied the size of PCF airholes is how it affects the loss of the fundamental mode.(5) Studied the several factors that impact on PCF sensor performance, they are the shapeof air holes arranged in, the shape of air holes itself, the thickness of the metal film, theposition of the metal film and the analyte refractive index. Finally, we got their loss spectrasand discussed their impact on the performance of PCF sensor.
