Three dimensional (3D) display has witnessed rapid progress in recent years. People canenjoy the highly realistic sensation and sense of presence from the latest3D display. But thefeeling of uncomfortable will trouble users while they are immersing in the3D contents.Headache, tearing and even more several symptoms will be induced by the3D displays or3D contents. At present we judge the3D visual fatigue mostly rely on subjective feelings. There isn’t public received effective objective indicator to evaluate3D visual fatigue. Therefore, finding effective objective indicators which can evaluate the3D visual fatigue isthe focus topic for the scholars. The evaluation methods of eye fatigue at present have been summarized in this paper. Themechanism of stereo vision and symptoms associated with3D visual fatigue have beeninvestigated. Evaluation methods of visual fatigue of parallax stereoscopic displays aredesigned while two experiments are conducted. Three parts of work have been finished inthis paper:(1) The inadequate of evaluation methods has great influence on the study of3D visualfatigue. Objective evaluation methods and subjective scales of visual fatigue has beenproposed. Symptoms of visual fatigue has been analyzed combine the data of objective withthe subjective scores. The result of new method is more persuation for combining the taskperformance and subjective evaluation while effective objective indicator can be foundfrom the result.(2) An experiment based on multi videos has been designed to evaluate visual fatigue.Subjects watch several different types of videos while number of blinks, critical flickerfrequency (CFF), and scores of subjective questionnaire have been recorded during theexperiment. Results have proven that number of blinks have significant difference on3Dcontents and visual fatigue. Blink times can be used as an objective indicator of evaluatingvisual fatigue.(3) In view of the influence of contents, an experiment has been designed and conducted inwhich subjects were required to accomplish a task realized with random dot stereograms(RDS). RDS can get rid of the interference of content. The visual acuity, CFF and taskperformance of subjects were recorded during the experiment. The subjects were also askedto fill in a subjective scale questionnaire about the symptoms related to visual fatigue. Analysis of the experimental data shows that the trends of the correct rate are in line withthe result of subjective evaluation, which indicates that the correct rate can be used as anobjective indicator to evaluate3D visual fatigue of users.
