The wideband phased array radar is focused by the field of radar research at home andaboard because of its high range resolution. It meets the requirements of modern warfare,such as multi-target remote detection, target high-resolution imaging and targetidentification. However, the conventional problems of aperture fill time and beam spacedispersion would become more apparent in the wideband system. This makes it difficult forwideband phased array radar to obtain large scanning angle and large instantaneousbandwidth at the same time. And thus the performance of radar would be degraded greatly.This paper studies on a digital delay method based on subarray digital stretchprocessing instead of the analog time delay units for LFM signal. It not only resolves theproblem of the beam dispersion, but also reduces the costs and complexity of radar.This paper has carried out the following works: First, the research background and themeaning of the paper is introduced. Besides, the wideband phased array radarā€™sdevelopment and the related technical research are described. Second, the knowledge ofphased array antennas concerned is given, along with the analysis of restrictions oninstantaneous bandwidth. Then a traditional compensation by using analog delay line ispresented. It can solve the problem of beam dispersion. Third, a digital delay method basedon subarray digital stretch processing for LFM signal is proposed. And the deduction of itsmathematical module and the simulation are given. Fourth, the solution about digitalmodulation technique applied on the subarray of wideband phased array radar is putforward, and the software implementation based on FPGA is also included. Fifth,experiments are performed to testify the solution on the hardware platform of high-speeddigital TR unit. Specific experimental results are given to illustrate the feasibility of thissolution.
