With the advent of video application such as digital television and videotelephone, research on video compression coding gets deeper and deeper,consequently there appears a variety of excellent compression coding standards.Among these coding standards, due to its excellent performance,MPEG-2is appliedwidely in many fields. However, in application such as wireless video conference,MPEG-2standard is not applicable. Compared with it, H.264standard not only hasbetter coding efficiency, but also performs well in image quality and fault-tolerantability. But MPEG-2has been applied for such a long time that it has accumulatedlarge amounts of data resources, and in the broadcasting and television industry,MPEG-2is still widely applied. In order to make full use of these multimediaresources, it is necessary to converted video resources that are compressed usingMPEG-2to video resources that are compressed using H.264.The basic form of transcoder structure is cascaded pixel-domain transcoderwhich is so-called―whole encoding and whole decoding‖transcoder. It consists of adecoder and an encoder in series and re-encodes the decoded data to achieve thepurpose of transcoding. Adopting the way of whole encoding and whole decoding,this structure requires a lot of computation during transcoding process, and thustranscoder’s real-time performance isn’t very good. But at the same time it also hasmany advantages, such as simple structure, no image shift, better image quality etc.This thesis adopt the solution of cascaded pixel-domain transcoder. In order to meetthe need of transcoder design, an hardware platform of excellent performance iscritical. TI DaVinci is software and hardware development platform that is introducedspecifically for embedded multimedia application. Meanwhile TI provide a completeset of video development solution to work with the entire development platform. SoDaVinci platform can meet the need of transcoder design.First,this thesis introduces the MPEG series and H.26X series video codingstandard, and discusses implementation methods and project value of transcoder.next, it introduces the DaVinci chip TMS320DM6446and SEED-DVS6446development platform. On this development board, the thesis further describes indetail how to build a development platform based on DaVinci technology, and analyzes boot process of system and the corresponding configuration in accordancewith the operating system boot sequence. Meanwhile after the introduction of theCodec Engine and Codec Engine API, the thesis designs ARM-side applicationprogram which implement transcoding using Codec Engine API.The applicationprogram convert MPEG-2video file to H.264video file.At last,the thesis gives asummary and prospects of future work.
