With the development of global economy and the improvement in oil demand, theoffshore oil transportation and offshore oil exploration have become more and morebusy, which increase the likelihood of marine oil spill. The ocean pollution, which ismainly caused by marine oil spill accidents, is a huge environmental problem. Thesatellite especially the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a well-known effective tool infiguring out this problem. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a kind of high resolutionimaging radar that is placed in moving platform such as airplane and satellite. SARutilizes microwave remote sensing technology which is independent of weathercondition and sun illumination, and images can be obtained under all time, day andnight, with long distance conditions. Therefore, SAR plays an important role inmilitary and civil applications.The operating principle of SAR and the Range-Doppler algorithm have beenintroduced in detail. The basic idea of RD algorithm is that two-dimensionalprocessing of echo data can be divided into two one-dimensional processing. ThenMatlab software is employed to complete the point target simulation. Speckle noise isa large problem in SAR images, according to the speckle characteristics of SARimage, a deeper discussion have been done about the filtering methods of SAR imageand the most suitable filtering method for the SAR image, which prepared for detectoil spill, has been got. an improved detection algorithm, based on Canny algorithmand thresholding algorithm, for SAR image is proposed. By the consideration of theapplicability and practicability of the proposed algorithm, the SAR images for theexperiment include different satellites in different modes, such as ENVISAT andRADARSAT-1and it makes the result more robust. Experimental results demonstratethat the method proposed in this paper is robust and effective to extract edges of SARimage accurately.
