As the improvement of living standards, it is leading to sharp increase in thepurchase of private cars. More and more motor vehicle directly lead to trafficcongestion and frequent accidents. The low efficiency of manual management by thetraffic administrative department is no longer suitable for the development of trafficmanagement. Intelligent transportation system opens a new route for trafficmanagement to solve this problem. As an important part of intelligent transportationsystem, automatic identification system becomes an important tool for monitoringtraffic. A vehicle recognition system based on the combination of piezoelectric sensorand laser ranging is proposed. In the high-speed running state, the motor vehicles canbe automatically identified. This vehicle recognition system solves the immediateconcerns of the traffic administrative department.The vehicle recognition system proposed in this paper use the piezoelectricsensor to collect data from the vehicle entering the detection area, such as vehiclewheelbase, the number of axles, track, the number of tires and speed of the vehicle.Laser ranging sensor is used to get the height of the vehicle. Combining the speed ofvehicle and the frequency of the laser, we can get the length of the vehicle. The widthof the vehicle is extracted by the image shot by the Internet Protocol Camera. Threetypes of devices work together to get the speed, dimension and chassis data. Establishthe database for vehicle information of various vehicle manufacturers and query thedatabase using Visual C++through ADO objects.From the vehicle recognition system proposed in this paper, both chassis dataand dimensions can be obtained. These main features play an important role inimproving the reliability and accuracy of the system.
