High speed, high precision and intelligentialization are an inevitable developmenttrend for parallel robots. However, in view of the present situation, there are someproblems, such as long development cycle, high cost, when a parallel robot isdeveloped. This paper is based on the key project of the National Natural ScienceFoundation, which is about less degree of freedom parallel mechanism innovation andsystem integration design. According to the demand of top-down design software forparallel robots design, a digital design platform based on CAD/CAE software andsecondary development technology is studied.The digital design platform covers many important parts of parallel robots design,including conceptual design, structure design, components selection, comprehensiveperformance prediction and so on. The platform realizes intelligentialization andparallelization in parallel robots design so that it can help to improve the efficiency ofresearch and development.The originality of this approach can be summarized as follows.(1) Digital design process of parallel robots is analyzed and summarized.Combined with a variety of functional requirements, the overall framework of digitaldesign platform is developed and the detailed implementation process of the platformis planned.(2) The key functions of digital design platform are developed based onfunctions and interfaces of MATLAB, SolidWorks and SAMCEF. The functions ofMATLAB are developed with the COM component technology. Combined withSolidWorks API secondary development technology, the functions about componentsselection and parametric design, automatic virtual assembly, interference check,automatic model simplification and simulation of kinematics and dynamics aredeveloped. Combined with SAMCEF modeling principle, the method of analysisfeature definition is put forward. Then the class diagram of analysis feature isestablished by using object-oriented method.(3) The key technology of CAD/CAE integration is further researched. Theparametric geometric model of mechanism in the finite element software SAMCEF is realized based on geometry information mapping technology in parametric diary(Notebook). Then the analysis feature mapping technology based on finite elementmodeling grammar (BACON-Epilogue) is established and the implementation processof parametric analysis feature is detailed. As a result, CAD/CAE integrated methodbased on the mode of data communication is summed up. It helps to realize theautomatic transmission for geometric and feature data from CAD system to CAEsystem. So the static and dynamic characteristics of robots could be quickly estimated.(4) The digital design platform for parallel robots is developed with MATLAB,SolidWorks, SAMCEF and VB.NET language. Through the application in a variety ofparallel robot design process, the platform is proved to be effective. The platform hasadvantages of friendly interface, convenient operation, and strong scalability.
