The terrestrial broadcasting industry is experiencing a challenging eradue to the current deficiency of spectrum resources and next generationdigital TV broadcasting standards are expected to improve the spectrumefficiency. For this reason, a new robust transmission system–CloudTransmission has been proposed for terrestrial broadcasting. It raises newrequests for channel coding technique. This thesis proposes and studies theLDPC-RS two-dimensional product codes along with its encoding anddecoding techniques as a promising channel coding solution for CloudTransmission. This thesis introduces the principles for LDPC-RS product codes andtraditional decoding solutions. Based on this, the thesis proposes a novelturbo-like hybrid iterative decoding scheme which further improves thedecoding performance of the LDPC-RS product code. The decoding schemecombines a hybrid LDPC decoder and a RS+LDPC hybrid hard-decisiondecoder to form a turbo-like decoding structure. By ingeniously applyingdifferent improved decoding techniques at proper stages and performingError Estimation and Soft Value Modification techniques, the proposeddecoding sheme greatly improves the error performance in low SNR regionswhile reducing the computational complexity in moderate and high SNRregions compared with the simple concatenation of LDPC and RS decoding. Moreover, the thesis proposes a rate compatible LDPC-RS productcode to further reduce time-space complexity by adaptively choosing thedecoding code rate. Simulation results verify the outstanding errorperformance and suitability for energy saving applications. At last, the thesisstudies the feasibility of building LDPC-RS product codes using long LDPCcode words. However, corresponding analysis points out that long LDPC-RScodes built by “vertical RS ranging” or “folding” methods lose the “productproperty”.
