Disc-based bioassays have become novel and promising POC tools for various applications in chemical analysis and biomedical diagnosis, because the polycarbonate (PC) base of disc can be served as substrate to prepare bioassays, as well as optical drives can be adapted as precise optical reading devices for signal processing, which demonstrate great advantages in low-cost, easy operation, fast speed and is widely used chemical analysis and biomedical detection. This thesis studies mainly the feasibility and accuracy of screening disc-based bioassays with standard optical drives of ordinary desktop/notebook computers with free CD/DVD quality diagnostic system. In particular, we have compared the performance of three free online CD/DVD diagnostic software: PlexUtilities, Optical Drive Control (ODC), Kprobe, first with arrays of mm-size printed ink dots and then with biotin-streptavidin binding assays. We have confirmed that the error number is related to the size of the ink spots, while the error number density (integrated error counts per unit area) is proportional to ODR of the spots. Furthermore, ODC program would be the first choice for its compatibility with different brands of optical drives and the convenience of the subsequent data processing.
