The study of gender difference in language has become increasingly important inthe field of sociolinguistics. There are many ways and theories which can beattributed to the investigation of gender language with the development of linguistics. With the deepening of the researches, the attention of gender language has beendiverted to the differentiation on conversational strategies, discourse styles and otherrelated aspects rather than linguistic level. Most studies on language and gender areinterested in studying gender differences in ordinary interactions, such as,TV plays, novels, plays and speeches in hospital. Few of them adopt the language, especially, ofcontemporary Chinese talk shows as the data. The language of talk show not only isclose to real life, but also has its own features. The study of talk show will help thepublic to improve the comprehension on the gender differences of language. This study explores gender language from the perspective of conversationalstructure, conversational strategies and conversational styles as the theoreticalframework. And it employs the language of Chao Ji Fang Wen as the data. Itsystematically analyses the conversations of the show from nine perspectives, whichare interruptions, overlaps, silence, minimal responses, hedges, tag-questions, and theamount of speech as well as topic control in order to study gender differences inconversational interaction in the specific context of talk show. The results show that men interrupt and overlap more than women inconversation in terms of conversational structure; women employ much more minimalresponses and silence as well as hedges than men from the perspective ofconversational strategies. When it comes to conversational styles, the female are morelikely to use tag-questions and politeness than male, And they are more talkativewhen they are talking about some trivial affairs丨ike family, love, marriages, etc.,while men are much more interested in some social topics, such as economy, politics, machines, etc. Based on the above research results, this thesis attempts to explain the resultsfrom the aspect of biological, physical, social and cultural factors. The findings of thisthesis will shed a new light on the complicated relationship between language andgender, and it can be served as a complimentary study of gender language.
