With the fast development of information and technology, Internet has become adigital medium that human beings must interact with during daily life. A good webpage design has a big influence on the pleasure and satisfactory of people when theyinteract with web page, so it can determine whether the web can reach its businesstarget. As web page designers, they should adjust the visual elements and improve theinterface to a certain level that can meet different user’s needs and preference. Pictureis a very important element in web page design so the research of how pictures canbetter used in web page is of great significance.Based on the picture superiority effect theory, the research of picture superiorityeffect in different fields is discussed. Then, the picture superiority effect is applied toweb page design and the relationship between web page types and picture superiorityeffect is researched through experiment. At the same time, the inner-outer restrictionsof picture superiority effect are discussed and the existing conditions of picturesuperiority effect are concluded and the design thinking about developing the biggestpicture superiority effect in web page design is proposed here. Then within theresearch of how the picture superiority effect playing a role in web page design,picture cognition superiority and emotion superiority are found based on themeasurement of user experience. Based on the Norman theory and result ofexperiment, picture superiority effects in web page design which are picture cognitionsuperiority effect and picture emotion superiority effect are propose d. These twopicture superiority effects can enrich the definition of picture superiority effect in webpage design.After that, picture superiority effect in web page design is mapped into the weband picture cognition design strategy and picture emotion design strategy are putforward. Picture cognition design strategy in web page can be divided into three ways,picture representation design, picture information visualization design and picturesimplified design to meet users’ cognition needs. Picture emotion design strategy inweb page can be divided into visual guidance design and story telling design to meetusers’ emotional needs. On the basis of these two design strategies, picture designmodels contain the user dimensionality, picture dimensionality and picture superiorityeffect dimensionality are concluded and can be a design guideline of web page and aiming at developing the picture superiority effect to the highest level.At the last part of thesis, two websites are designed based on the picture designstrategies. Based on the website target, designers who regard the picture element asthe priority visual element, apply the picture design model to web page visualelements design and style identification can be a feasible web page design thinking.The innovation of this paper is building the relationship among picturesuperiority effect, web page design and picture design strategy and trying to studyhow to apply the picture element and picture superiority effect to web page design andmeet the web target. The research of picture superiority effect in web page design canbe a design principle and thinking guidance towards web page designer andmeanwhile it is a research and supplement of human-centered design ways.
