Most domestic steel plants’main products are bars. In order to meet customers’ requirements, to facilitate the transportation of the bars, steel plants generally pack the bars into bundles. Counting the bars for every bundles has become a problem that hardly plagued the steel plants. In the conventional production line, the count for bundle of steel is mainly completed by labors. This approach is not only inefficient, but also costs a lot of human and financial resources. At high strength operating conditions, workers can easily become fatigued and this may lead to the inaccurate counting of the bars. Manual operation mode has seriously affected the steel plant’s production efficiency, and it’s not conducive to the automation management of the steel plants.In order to change the traditional disadvantages and to achieve the automatic online counting for steel bars, we designed a more complete bar counting hardware system, which consists of a control module and a data processing module. The control module takes the PIC18F45K22as the core, uses photoelectric sensors to detect bars and regards LED lights as the lighting system. When the coming bars are detected by the photoelectric sensors, the PIC18F45K22MCU would let the lighting system turn on, then send sigals of photoing to data processing module according to the set trigger interval. And it would send synchronous data to the data processing module as well. The data processing module takes S3C6410processor as the core, uses the USB camera as capture devices for the end surface of the steel bars, and sends control commands to the control module and recieves feedback synchronization data from it through serial communication interface. While the data completely processed, they would be displayed on the touch screen.By detailed analysing the bar production line, this article gives the overall design scheme of the counting system, introduces the selection of the main components in the system, makes a detailed analysis about the important circuit of the control module and data processing module, and gives out the software implementation process of the control module. After testing, the control module can control the lighting system and optical sensors accurately and stably and can also transmit the trigger sigal and the synchronous data to the data processing module promptly. The data processing module can complete the acquisition for pictures and the processing for data.
