With the development of IC designing and manufacturing technology, the chip’sdensity and complexity also rises with the astonished rate. The traditional buses archi-tecture can’t meet the requirement of SoC system development any more. NoC(Networkon Chip), a communication-centric technique, provides a new solution for futureMPSOCs. But it still cannot get rid of the physical restrict of the electrical interconnec-tion and has encountered a bottleneck in delay, network bandwidth and power con-sumption. Optical interconnects, as a new method of interconnection, has the incompa-rable advantage in extremely low delay, high bandwidth and low power dissipation overelectronic interconnects. In recent years, the rapid development of CMOS-compatibleoptical devices makes it realizable to apply to on-chip interconnection. Optical on-chipinterconnects is considered as a promising technology platform for chip-scale intercon-nection networks. As silicon-photonic manufacturing technology is not mature, software simulationis an important method in optical on-chip interconnection technology early research. With few simulation tools for performance analysis of optical networks on-chip, thisthesis designs and implements a simulator for optical networks on-chip. It is capable ofmodeling and analyzing the performance metrics of electronic networks, photonic net-works, and hybrid networks, which includes latency, throughput and energy dissipation. With this simulator, researchers can explorer the design space of optical networkson-chip.This thesis firstly discusses and analyzes various techniques of optical networkson–chip. Based on the analysis of the design goal and the simulation methods, it pro-poses the simulation framework. And then it describes the design and implementation ofevery module, including simulation engine, photonic device library, electronic devicelibrary, processor core and energy dissipation models of photonic sub-network. Bymodeling and analyzing the performance metrics of photonic Torus network with Phoe-nixSim and the proposed simulator, this thesis validates the accuracy of the proposedsimulator. Furthermore, this thesis uses the proposed simulator to model and analyze theperformance metrics of photonic Torus network and photonic Corona network.
