Wireless sensor networks (WSN) is one of the important technology to obtaininformation because of its low cost, low power, distributed, self-organization and othercharacteristics. And it’s a hot point in information research field. It has broadapplication prospects in the field of agriculture, medical care, building and military. However, energy restricted of the sensor nodes makes the study and application ofWireless sensor networks facing enormous challenges. Reducing energy consumptionand prolonging network lifetime of wireless sensor networks has been an importantresearch direction. Topology control is one of the core support technologies of WSN. Itcan not only to optimize the network topology, but also provides support platform forrouting protocol, object location, time synchronization and data fusion, it’s beneficialto prolong the lifetime of whole network effectively. So the research of topologycontrol algorithm with high energy efficient has important theoretical significance andapplication value.Firstly, this paper introduces the architecture and key technologies of wirelesssensor networks, and analyses the importance of topology control andoptimization. Then it discusses the design goal of network topology control. Secondly,we research the topology control algorithm from the point of node power control andhierarchical clustering. Then analyze some typical topology control algorithms inwireless sensor networks. Finally, this paper chooses the typical clusteringalgorithm-LEACH as the study object.Against the shortcomings of LEACH algorithm, this paper proposes an energyefficient topology control algorithm (EETCA) for wireless sensor networks. EETCAalgorithm aims to balance the energy consumption of the whole network, it improvesLEACH algorithm in the aspects of cluster head selection, cluster formation andstabilization phase data transmission. It could avoid partial nodes energy dissipationtoo fast and balance the load of the network effectively by taking the residual energy ofnodes, the size of the cluster and the optimal transmission hop count into account.Simulation results shows that EETCA algorithm is better than the LEACH andEB-LEACH algorithm in residual energy in network and number of nodes alive, it canprolong the lifetime of the whole network.
